Prof Peter Cawood

Chair of Earth Sciences

Peter Cawood obtained his PhD from the University of Sydney in 1980. In 2010 he was appointed Chair in Geology of the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews.

After his PhD he had post-doctoral and teaching positions in New Zealand (1980-1982), Australia (1982-1993), Canada (1983-1994) and Australia (1994-2010). From 1997-2005 he was deputy director and then director of the Tectonics Special Research Centre at the University of Western Australia, which included nodes at Curtin, Texas, Harvard and Yale universities. In 1998 he helped establish the John de Laeter (JDL) Centre of Mass Spectrometry to oversee radiogenic and stable isotope infrastructure development at Western Australian universities and he was director of the Centre from 2002-2006.

From 2008-2010 he was President of the Geological Society of Australia. He is co-editor-in-chief of the international journal Precambrian Research and is currently, or has recently served, on the editorial boards of Geology, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geological Society of America Bulletin, and Asian Journal of Earth Sciences.

Peter's research is concerned with field-based studies of mountain belts and what they tell us about the way the Earth has looked and behaved through time. His work ranges in scale from global reconstructions to microscopic examination of mineral grains. He has worked in mountain belts ranging in age from Archean to Recent, and from many disparate geographic areas around the globe.

Peter's recent work includes syntheses of: Precambrian plate tectonics; Accretionary Mountain Belts; the Proterozoic Assembly of Australia; Models of Supercontinent Reconstructions; and Paleogeography of the Pacific Margin of Gondwana. He is also noted for the application of micro-analytical techniques to provenance studies, including the ion microprobe, and he has applied this methodology to unravelling basin history and provenance of a variety of tectonic settings.

Current studies are focused on the record of continental growth and on the drivers and environmental consequences of mountain building.
